Student Behavior Policies/Consequences

Prestwood School Rules are posted in all classrooms, the office and the Multi-Purpose Room.  Individual classroom rules are posted in the individual classrooms.  Most Prestwood students follow the school rules.  If a student chooses not to follow school or classroom rules, appropriate consequences result.  These consequences depend upon the severity of the infraction and could include any of the following:

·          Time out – sitting on a bench, or remaining in class or in the office at recess

·          Problem solving – writing a plan to improve behavior, discussion of Life Skills, writing an explanation of or an apology for the behavior, conflict resolution techniques.

·          Conference with the teacher or the principal

·          Citation (see explanation below)

·          Detention (see explanation below)

Citation

A citation is a written behavior report informing the parent, teacher and principal of the inappropriate behavior.  It is completed by the adult observing the inappropriate behavior and given to the child’s teacher or the principal.  There are 3 copies of this form.  The white copy is sent home to be signed by the parent, the pink copy goes to the principal, and the yellow copy goes to the teacher.  Parents are to send the signed copy back to the teacher on the next school day. Once a student receives a citation, the nature of the inappropriate behavior is entered into his/her school records.

Detention Procedure

If the action taken on the citation states detention, the following occurs:

·          Student serves detention on the next scheduled detention day.

·          Primary detention may be held Tuesday and Thursday, as needed, during the lunch recess.

·          Grades 4/5 detention may be held Tuesday and Thursday, as needed, after school for 30 minutes.  Parents will need to arrange transportation home.

Suspendable Behavior

If a suspendable infraction should occur, the principal or designee will follow the district suspension policy, which may or may not include suspension warning.  Prior to determining if the behavior is suspendable the principal or designee will consult with all parties involved and with the classroom teacher.  A suspendable offense includes:

·          Causing, attempting to cause or threatening to cause physical injury to another person

·          Possessing, selling or otherwise furnishing any firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object at school or at a school sponsored activity

·          Unlawfully possessing, using, selling or otherwise furnishing or being under the influence of a restricted drug, alcoholic beverage or intoxicant.

·          Causing or attempting to cause damage, stealing or attempting to steal school or private property.

·          Committing an obscene act, or engaging in habitual profanity, vulgarity or sexual harassment.

·          Disrupting school activities or defying the authority of school supervisors, teachers, or administrators or other school personnel engaged in the performance of their duties.

·          Knowingly receiving stolen school or private property.

Serious offences such as open and blatantly disrespectful defiance: assault or fighting; intimidation or extortion; hate violence; sexual harassment; possession of weapons (e.g. knives, slingshots, BB and pellet guns, firearms including paraphernalia shall result in an immediate referral to the principal for possible suspension and/or recommendation to the Board of Trustees for possible expulsion, following procedures stipulated in district policy and the Education Code of the State of California.  Suspensions range from one to five days; expulsions may be for a year or more.  In some cases, California Law requires reports to be filed with law enforcement agencies as well.
